Walk to Defeat ALS at Roger Dean Stadium Jupiter
Contributed by: Penny Sheltz on 4/20/2008

The local walk to defeat ALS was held at Roger Dean Stadium Saturday, April 19 in Jupiter at Abacoa. Each spring thousands of people around the state join together to raise funds in support of patient care and research for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also know as Lou Gehring's disease as it took the life of the baseball great. There is presently no cure for this devastating disease that affects over 30,000 people in the US. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the motor neuron in the brain and spinal cord. Funding for research is essential to the fight to find a cure. Every 90 minutes someone dies of ALS. Approximately 1200 Floridians are livng with ALS.
Walks are held in multiple locations throughout Florida, and our local walk was held at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter at Abacoa. People who walked were sponsored or had fund raising events and collected money from friends, family members, collegues and business sponsors.
Walks empower patients, family and friends to do something about a disease that often leaves them feeling powerless. Walks range from 1.8 miles to 3 miles and take about an hour to complete. All walks are wheelchair and stroller accessible.
Dileep Dadlani, Director of Corporate Development (ddadlani@alsfl.org) said that fund raising brought in over $100,000.
Jupiter Diamondbacks travel baseball team helped out at the ALS walk. The Jupiter Diamondbacks are having a Fishing Tournament with big prizes April 26 to help send their team to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY.
