The Loxahatchee River Historical Society, operators of Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, have announced plans for celebrating the 150th anniversary of Palm Beach County's oldest building.
An afternoon outing and dedication ceremony on Sunday, January 10, 2010 will mark the arrival of the lighthouse construction crew on that day in 1860. A day-long event on July 10th will celebrate the first official lighting of the beacon on the same day in 1860.
Meanwhile, the Loxahatchee River Historical Society has launched a campaign to gain sponsors for a commemorative plaque to be erected near the landmark tower. Says Society Chairman James D. Snyder: "Just picture yourself standing before a tilted five- by seven-foot plaque. Engraved on one side will be a replica of the original engineering design by George Meade. At the top will be an inscription dedicating the plaque" (see schematic).
"Most of the space on the plaque," says Snyder, "will consist of some 300 donor "markers," each an inch and a half tall and four inches wide. On these will be the personal messages of those who have joined in to support this important celebration. A message might honor a family, memorialize a loved one, celebrate a marriage that took place at the lighthouse, or pay tribute to a Jupiter pioneer. With room for a title line and four smaller ones, you can even pen your own poem to what the lighthouse has meant in your life."
Each of the individual markers requires a donation of $300 or more. Adds Snyder: "We hope these inscriptions will be like miniature time capsules. The inscriptions and the base plaque itself will be weatherproofed regularly and will hopefully still be there the day the Jupiter Light celebrates its 300th anniversary."
May 2008 an act of Congress declared the lighthouse grounds an Outstanding Natural Area under permanent Bureau of Land Management protection. "A task force of several local governments and organizations has been working with the BLM to develop a three-year management plan," says Historical Society President & CEO, Jamie Stuve. "We expect the final version to be ready by January, and we think it's very fitting that in one event we commemorate the day when workers came to finish the lighthouse 150 years ago as well as the document that will govern what happens here for the next 150."
Activities on July 10 marking the first lighting of the beacon are "still under construction," says Stuve. "However, we can say that those who contributed to the commemorative plaque will be invited to a special evening ceremony."
Here are some of the highlights of public events on the Historical Society's newly-published 2009-2010 events. For all events and programs visit the LRHS website at www.jupiterlighthouse.org.
