Guests had a chance to step into the shoes of the blind for a few hours on October 10 at the Third Annual Thomas Hartig Dining in the Dark dinner. For a good cause and to promote blind awareness, 130 guests contributed their time and dollars to enjoy a full three course meal served in total darkness. The event was held at the Holiday Inn Airport. The guest servers were volunteers from the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office SWAT team. Senator Jeff Atwater was the keynote speaker. Andy Preston of Gater radio emceed and music was provided by blind pianist Clay Ivory.
The event is an annual fundraiser for Florida Outreach Center for the Blind, which provides free mobility, independent living and computer training for the blind and visually impaired. The proceeds of the event go to support these efforts. Executive Director of the Center, Carolyn Lapp wishes to thank all those who came out and especially our major donors the Palm Beach Kennel Club, the Lake Worth Lions Club and the Palm Beach Post.
The Thomas Hartig Inspirational Award was given to Gary Metzler of Port St. Lucie. The award is presented each year to a blind member of the community who has inspired others. The award is named for Thomas Hartig who brought telephone newspaper service to the blind.
