Why would a professional photographer, a chef, a graphic designer, banker, an insurance agent, several businessmen and a sailboat owner give free services to a bunch of kids?
Because leaders of the LDS church, none of whom are paid for their church service, were determined to throw a clean party for teens who enjoy uplifting activities.
"It's one of those things that's so just important that you teach kids that you can have fun and live [moral] standards at the same time," said Hugh Jacobs, a banker and father of 16-year old Brittany, who attended the dance. "You don't have to lower your standards, or go by the standards that others set, just to have fun."
Youth from Jupiter attended the 2nd annual "Modest Prom" in Stuart Saturday, sponsored by the regional congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In exchange for clean-shaven boys and girls in dresses with cap sleeves or sparkly shrugs, the teens were treated like royalty.
Julie Deboskey is a Jupiter resident who worked at the prom and stumbled into church the next morning, alongside the kids who attended. "I am so tired," she said. "But what was really neat to see was how many adults cared that these kids had a good time."
