In 1854, President Franklin Pierce signed an order to set aside a parcel of land on the Fort Jupiter Reservation for a lighthouse and in 1860, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse beacon was lit for the first time as a guiding light to mariners. Today, May 8, 2008, President George W. Bush signed a Congressional bill to designate the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and surrounding 126 acres an "Outstanding Natural Area" making it the second in the country and the first east of the Mississippi River.

The Loxahatchee River Historical Society (LRHS), operational managers of the Lighthouse, are proud that our treasured local heritage is receiving the national recognition it deserves. "We see this as an opportunity to expand our role as educational stewards of this rich maritime history on behalf of our community for all Americans," beams Jamie Stuve, Executive Director of the Society.

As a national eco-heritage destination, the Society anticipates increased tourism to our area and looks forward to participating in this economic boon. The LRHS is hopeful members of the community will respond in kind by volunteering their time and joining as members in this exciting time of growth. The Society currently offers many opportunities for public participation in sponsoring educational exhibits and future events at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum. As new exhibits are being developed, community residents are encouraged to donate artifacts, photographs and memorabilia relating to our history.

Now that this important legislation has successfully navigated "From the Lighthouse to the Whitehouse," the LRHS will continue its roll to preserve, maintain, interpret and provide public access through their long-term lease with the United States Coast Guard.
