Oakwood Center Clients Gain
Confidence, Perseverance Through Artwork

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL.- On Monday, April 28, 2008 Oakwood Center of the Palm Beaches proudly presented "Art at Oakwood." The art show, which featured more than 70 pieces of art, including acrylic paintings, ink and stick creations, textile art and collages, were presented by Oakwood's talented clients, under the direction of teaching artists: Ruth Amiel, Nancy Rossi, Maryellen Shafer, Kathy Azeez, Allison Theoret, and art class coordinator, Barbara E. Golden, Ph. D.

As an innovative leader in the mental health community, Oakwood Center uses many forms of therapy, including art therapy, as a way to help clients cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures that come with creating artwork.

"The art show is the culmination of months of art classes in which students learn valuable personal traits as well as artistic techniques," said art class coordinator Dr. Barbara Golden. "With these students, gaining self-assurance and learning the importance of perseverance will help them greatly in their future encounters."

One of those students is Fulami. In Fulami's first art class, she quickly became frustrated when she felt that all she could draw were straight lines. Her teacher told her "straight lines are good. There is nothing wrong with drawing straight lines." As she drew, straight lines became curved lines, and that's when the "dancing flowers" in Fulami's first piece of artwork emerged. "I never thought my painting would be worth anything," said Fulami. "Coming to Oakwood helped me not give up. Oakwood taught me to stick by my goals, and that everything has a beginning."

"All of the artists were enthused about what they were able to accomplish," said Dr. Linda DePiano, CEO of Oakwood Center. "Seeing how excited and proud of themselves they are makes it all worthwhile. We are thrilled with the amount of effort they put into this show and hope they were just as pleased with the results."

Oakwood Center provides treatment for adults and children with behavioral disorders to help them restore and maintain their productive lives in the community.
