El Sol, Jupiter's Neighborhood Resource Center, has been awarded an $8,100 grant by the American Cancer Society (ACS) to conduct a cancer education and outreach prgam that will target workers served by the Center.
The goal of the program is to educate persons about colorectal, prostate and skin cancer and inform them of the warning signs, screening process and preventive measures. Called "Staying Healthy," the program will include a series of information sessions to inform workers on the importance of proper nutrition and physical activity to maintain healthy lives.
Bilingual health educators and other health professionals will conduct the information sessions with a different topic being presented at each class. The Center will also assist workers who are interested in getting a cancer screening because most of them do not have the funds to pay for the medical services.
El Sol applied for the grant earlier this year through the North Palm Beach County Unit of the ACS, which assisted the non-profit Resource Center with its application.
"We are extremely grateful to the American Cancer Society for this grant because it will help us meet a critical need for our clients, most of whom are poor immigrants who have not had access to modern standards of health maintenance and disease prevention," said Terry McFarland, Chair of El Sol's Development and Finance Committee.
The grant is also a recognition of the importance of El Sol as a resource center "that is having a positive impact in helping so many in the commmunity," McFarland said. El Sol was established in September 2006 by the Town of Jupiter to address nuisances and health and safety issues associated with the of scores of workers who gathered along Center Street daily to solicit jobs from motorists.
The Center is at 106 Military Trail and is the only place legally sanctioned by the Town of Jupiter for employers to pick up workers. The Center's services are free. Employers pay the workers directly. For information on hiring workers or to volunteer call 745-9860.
