Jupiter Medical Center, Jupiter Medical Center Auxiliary and Admiral's Cove CARE Charitable Foundation have awarded this year's Teen Volunteer Scholarships to three local students.
Dalbir Bahga, a 2008 graduate of Palm Beach Gardens High School, Leah Merkin, a member of the William T. Dwyer Community High School class of 2008 and Matthew Maggio, 2008 graduate of Jupiter High School were awarded the scholarships at a reception. All three scholarship recipients will pursue a career in the healthcare field. Each will receive $1500.
The hospital auxiliary and the Admiral's Cove community established the scholarship to recognize local high school graduates who have been active volunteers at Jupiter Medical Center and to encourage young people to join the hospital's teen volunteer corps.
Selection of the honorees is based on performance as a volunteer, participation in other activities, references, academic performance, and acceptance into a college to study in a healthcare field.
Dalbir logged more than 190 hours of volunteer service at the Hospital's emergency department, Leah gave 139 hours of service at The Pavilion, the Hospital's nursing home and Matthew volunteered 127 hours in cardiology and other departments.
"These scholarships have been established to recognize the service and dedication of teens who have volunteered at Jupiter Medical Center and to support them in attaining their healthcare career goals through higher education", said Maddie Hamot, coordinator of the scholarship program and Executive Vice President of the Jupiter Medical Center Auxiliary.
"As a healthcare company, the scholarship program is one way of recognizing our mission and investing in the work force of tomorrow", said JMC CEO Paul Dell Uomo.
"Volunteer work always has a pay-off, but it's usually in the form of knowing that you've done something to make a difference. However at Jupiter Medical Center, teen volunteers may also be recognized in another way", added Hamot.
A not-for-profit 283-bed community Medical Center consisting of 163 private acute care hospital beds and 120 long-term care beds, JMC provides a broad range of services, with specialty concentrations in orthopaedics, long-term care, minimally invasive vascular procedures, cancer care and advanced diagnostics. JMC is currently in the midst of a major, multi-year growth plan which includes an Emergency Department expansion. The Medical Center has approximately 1,500 employees, 490 physicians and 700 volunteers.
