WE LOVE OUR LIGHTHOUSE
Contributed by: Anna Current on 7/23/2009

Congratulations Jupiter on your historic landmark.

The iconic 105' Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was completed in1859, and lit July 10, 1860. Its beacon symbolizes the proud history of Jupiter. Hopefully, next year, the Town of Jupiter will endorse a Lighthouse Festival so ALL the people can celebrate the 150-year operation of our lighthouse. It would be a perfect spot for a free public event to spend a summer afternoon...shade and a summer breeze on the inlet waterfront.

Countless Jupiter citizens and visitors would be proud to join in commemorating the valuable part our famous lighthouse beacon has played. It shone during the pivotal role Fort Jupiter played in our nation's maritime history. Citizens are proud that their historic structure is still in use today.

Generous thanks go to a small group of people who have so diligently worked to protect this monument. Last year, the Jupiter Lighthouse became the second American lighthouse to receive the federal Outstanding Natural Area Designation. Via this designation, the historic Florida landmark will be preserved and open to the public for generations to come for education, tours, park, recreation, cultural, or historic preservation purposes.

Historic Preservation is often self-justifying on purely cultural terms; however, the diversity of our community amply demonstrates the people can appreciate its history and artifacts or simply enjoy its surroundings. Either way, the public can come together to freely enjoy this historic treasure.

Significantly, the lighthouse is emblematic of our modern community. It is our most visible landmark, and it has captured the hearts of the community from one generation to the next. Lighthouses are noteworthy because they are among the oldest standing historic buildings in America. Only 30 historic lighthouses remain on our state's 1200-mile coastline...and ours is one of them!

This year, the Loxahatchee River Historical Society will celebrate the completion of the construction of the Lighthouse; hopefully, next year the rest of Jupiter will celebrate its 150-year operation.
