Florida's First Peoples Series:The Seminole People

Dr. Michele Williams of Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) will present The Seminole People at the Loxahatchee River Historical Society's free Lecture Series on Thursday, October 22, 2009. The lecture starts at 6 pm at the Juno Beach Town Center Council Chambers located at 340 Ocean Drive, Juno Beach. The Lecture Series is sponsored in part by the Town of Juno Beach and is funded by the Florida Humanities Council (FHC), state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The LRHS and the FHC are joining in a series of programs during 2009, spotlighting the region's Native American roots.

In Part One of this series, Dr. Williams previously explored the roots of Native American culture in our area, with a focus on the Jeaga and Hobe who lived near the Loxahatchee River for thousands of years. In Part Two, Dr. Williams will continue with a PowerPoint presentation on the 17 th & 18 th century Seminole Indians. The lecture will focus on how the Seminoles adapted to a new environment in Florida after leaving Georgia and will describe the history and culture of Seminoles before the Seminole War period.

Dr. Williams is currently Director of the FPAN- Southeastern Region at FAU-Ft. Lauderdale. Dr. Williams explains that FPAN is "devoted to engaging diverse publics on archaeological issues facing South Florida resources." Her responsibilities include public outreach, assisting local governments with protection of sites, and supporting the mission of the Florida Division of Historical Resources. She holds a B.A. in Botany, a Ph.D. and Masters degree in Anthropology, For more information on FPAN visit: www.flpublicarchaeology.org.
