A color pencil drawing by Jupiter High School student Itzel Martinez, 16, has won first place honors in El Sol's Art Fest 2009 poster contest.
The 2nd Annual show is Sunday, November 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature a variety of paintings, jewelry and handicrafts for sale, including Guatemalan apparel and crafts. Admission is free and there will be refreshments, marimba music and a raffle of serveral paintings.
Ms. Martinez' drawing was judged the best on the basis of creativity and adhering to the contest theme of "Building Bridges with Art," said Andrea Cleveland, Co-Chair of the Art Fest. The drawing depcits a person placing the missing pieces of a puzzle in a globe suspended above three other figures representing Mexico, Guatemala and the United States.
"We really liked the whole concept; it was well done, very precise," Ms. Cleveland said. Ms. Martinez said that in creating her drawing she was inspired by the notoion "that we are all brothers and sisters and we should be united."
"To me it means we are all a pieceof the puzzle and it takes all of the nations to be together in order to have peace," she said. She will receive a $100 prize for her winning poster at the Nov. 1 Art Fest at El Sol. Items to be showcased at the Art Fest are the work of Sol members, the majority of them immigrants from Guatemala and Mexico. They include several artists who have achieved reknown in their native countries.
This is the second year that the non-profit El Sol Neighborhood Resource Center (located at 106 Military Trail) and the Lighthouse Center for the Arts of Tequesta have sponsored the Art Fest. Ninety percent of the show's proceeds will go to the participating artists and crafts persons with the other ten percent designated to help support El Sol's arts and crafts programs.
