On Anchoring Around Peanut Island
Contributed by: Edwin Greenfield on 7/14/2009

Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet in keeping with it's "we are your Coast Guard" theme wants to educate all boaters about an ongoing problem with vessels anchoring in the main ship channel on the south side of Peanut Island.

Recently there have been several close calls when small boats anchored in the path of inbound ships. The inland navigation rules prohibit anchoring or obstructing the passage of a vessel that can navigate only within the confines of a narrow channel. Palm Beach harbor and its approaches are considered narrow channels. Large ships can not maneuver with the ease to avoid a pleasure boat without going aground.

The Coast Guard along with its local partners has begun a campaign to educate the boating public. Mariners that choose to disregard the law can face penalties up to but not to exceed $5000.00 for anchoring or obstructing the channel.
