What could make an award winning photo of the Jupiter Lighthouse even more memorable? How about using that photo to set a New Guinness World Record? That's exactly what one local family from Palm Beach County is trying to do and they're inviting people from all across the country to share in the experience with them.
Todd Bradford, from North Palm Beach, snapped an amazing photo of the Discovery Space Shuttle as it streaked over the Jupiter Lighthouse on December 9, 2006. Since then, his photo has won awards, was recreated in the Lake Worth street painting festival in February 2007, hangs in homes all across the United States, and has been placed on file at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
As if that wasn't enough, now the Bradford family has embarked on a once-in-a lifetime adventure to create the largest photo mosaic in the world which is featured at
www.PowerfulPixel.com . Once they reach their goal, their photo mosaic will beat the current world record set in Spain by over 43 times. It will be almost 5 acres in size and visible from satellites.
In order to create such an enormous picture, Bradford has taken his original digital picture and enlarged every single pixel (the tiny little dots of color that make up a picture) to 4-inch squares of color which will then be printed out on photographic paper. Next, each of those colored squares will be stapled to 4' x 8' sheets of plywood and finally, all the plywood will be laid out on the ground like a giant puzzle to form the final picture. When viewed from 1200 feet in the air, the mosaic will look as clear as a regular picture.
Once the photo has been certified as a new Guinness World Record, the project will be dismantled, the photo paper will be recycled, and all 6,650 sheets of plywood will be donated to organizations that build or repair homes for fellow Americans.
"I never thought I could ever be a world record holder because I'm just an ordinary guy without any extraordinary talent", Bradford said. As he talked to other people about his idea, he realized there were a lot of other ordinary people (including kids) with world-record aspirations, but no way to accomplish it... until now. "We might not be able to set world records individually, but working together, we can completely destroy the current world record."
This ordinary family with a big dream is inviting people of all ages to join them in their world record attempt. If you or someone you know has ever dreamed of being a world record holder, but don't have the talent or patience to become one on your own, you can become a member of the Bradford's team by sponsoring one of the colored squares of color that will be used to create the gigantic photo mosaic for $12. Whether you sponsor a pixel for yourself or give one away as a unique gift, all pixel sponsors receive a Certificate of Authenticity and their name is listed on the PowerfulPixel.com web site.
Since the project recently went public, people from over 20 states have already stepped up to become members of the team and sponsored pixels. The Bradford's think it is only a matter of time until all 50 states are represented in their project, but they think this project will have even more significance for the local people of South Florida.
"The Jupiter Lighthouse is such a big part of our community and our identity and we can't think of a better way to let the world know who we are", said Todd. "We think our neighbors here in south Florida feel the same about our great community and hope they will take 5 minutes to stop by the site to sponsor a pixel or two and become a member of our world record attempt team."
