Rock Painting for the garden
Contributed by: Brenda Nickolaus on 5/22/2009

This is a fun and economical way to add some indivual creativity to your garden. You can paint smooth or polished stones with flowers that will never fade and add inspiring words. Make one or two to say you love someone - or let your creativity pave the way. ttfn (ta,ta for now)

Rock Painting on Polished Stones Materials List:

  • polished stones from a dollar store or craft store, or smooth stones from your yard (I picked up some along the beach)
  • Acrylic paint or paint pens
  • heavy duty magnets or jewelery pins
  • glitter glue
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks or strong craft glue

Painted Stones Instructions:

Look for stones of a suitable shape for your project and select the perfect one for your project. In the photograph I used stones that were round and smooth front to paint on easier.

Wash the stones in soap and water and dry thoroughly.

Paint the stone in the base color and let dry.

To create a simple flower use a pencil eraser and dot your flower petals...add a contrasting color for the middle...and add leaves...or paint a picture or printed message ..."Dream" ...paint in a contrasting color. Simple ideas, using bright contrasting colors, work very well for this project. Let dry.

If desired, add glitter glue accents (touch of fairy magic)...and let dry.

Other uses for your stones....they make great gifts to give to friends and family...just turn over the stone and use the glue gun or strong craft glue to attach a fridge magnet. Younger children must ask an adult to help before working with a glue gun glue (they can get rather hot and burn fingers...mine included) A fun alternative would be to glue a jewelry pin on the back of your stone and wear it as cool pin.
