Who Would'a Thought?
Contributed by: Carol Roesch on 3/10/2007

Three of us have just opened a yarn shop called "Knit or Knot". This most recent endeavor has enabled us to make lots of new friends and helped us to fill our golden years with numerous enjoyable experiences.

It all started when I decided to crochet an afghan to donate to the assisted living community where my parents now reside. My friend noticed my handiwork and decided she should begin using her knitting talents to use up some yarn she had acquired while raising her three children. Realizing she needed a few notions to begin a project, she visited a small neighborhood yarn store. While there, she saw that the shop was going out of business. So she purchased the items she needed and proceeded to come to my house, as previously planned, to show my husband and me how to make her special spaghetti sauce. While we were cooking, our ideas about going into business for ourselves also started to simmer. Another friend of ours was retiring soon, so we thought it might be a good idea to ask her if she'd like to join us also. Within a week, the three of us owned a yarn shop! Who would'a thought?

As a retired elementary school teacher, a former secretary and realtor, and a soon-to-be-retired airline stewardess, our friends all figured we were having a severe case of "senior moments" and started calling us the "Knitwits". Oh! Oh! What were we getting ourselves into?

Of course, the first thing we needed to do, was decide on a name for our shop. So, after much brainstorming, we settled on the 'Knit or Knot" shop - the "Knot" part of it pertaining to the airline stewardess who didn't even know what yarn was at that time.

Timing is everything, as you know, and knitting and crocheting have become the newest craze. After just seven months of being in business, our list of customers has spread from the east coast to the west coast of Florida, as well as throughout various states, and even some visiting from abroad.

We've begun teaching knitting and crochet techniques both at the shop and in the town recreation center. Lessons are given for children and adults, males and females alike. In fact, one of our male patrons comes in to buy our yarns every so often to make his own argyle sweaters. (Just think of it -- a man knitting!) Other customers involve their families including grandparents and grandchildren, moms, daughters, and sons to learn the basics together. All are welcome to join us, whether it be for a lesson, or just to socialize and have some coffee "and".

Not only have our sessions provided a way to make new friends, but they have also been helping to relieve stress, oil our joints and keep our minds active and our fingers nimble. I'm sure other opportunities will continue to present themselves also.
