Summer has always been a challenge for the small businesses in our area. This summer is going to be extremely rough and many of our "mom and pop" entrepreneurs will not survive through to next season. With today's sorry economy, this crucial part of Jupiter's "heart" could be headed to a slow demise and needs everyone's help to sustain it.
It's hard to think of "the other guy" when rising prices are putting a squeeze on all of us, but this is one of those times when we need to remember why we chose to live in Jupiter. If the image of a small town feel, the historical places of interest, the "uniqueness", and the fact the Indiantown Road does not look like Northlake Blvd., comes to mind, you're on the right track. Small businesses are at the core of our town and are a strong component of the hometown charm that made us think: "This is where I want to live."
Those who have resided here "before Wal-Mart" have seen a lot of changes, but thanks to Mayor Golonka, Town Council and Staff, their strategies for Jupiter have promoted responsible growth in order to preserve its character.
If we wanted to look more like our southern neighboring municipalities, we residents would have embraced the "Jupiter Falls" shopping mall project that developers pushed to build near the northbound ramp onto 95 from Indiantown Road. Instead "Jupiter-ites" overwhelmingly protested and the Town hopefully will eventually be able to purchase the land as part of its Open Space Program.
This is another time to Rally. If it is important to YOU to keep the same vision for Jupiter, please keep the small businesses in mind when shopping, eating out, looking for services, socializing or seeking entertainment venues. When that tax rebate comes, think "hometown and local" rather than "big box". Instead of focusing on where we are now, we need to continually think of how we want to be. If we don't support our backyard economy, are we willing to loose part of why Jupiter is so dear to us?
