Girls JV Soccer Undefeated to Date
Contributed by: sue schlosberg on 12/17/2007

Jupiter High School Girls JV Soccer Team have been sweeping most teams they've played so far this season. Equally strong offensive and defensive play have kept all but one opponent scoreless. The first match of the season saw the only two goals scored against the tight defense which consists of Sophomores Rachel Montgomery, Callie Egan, Megan Pickering, and Freshmen Brittany Morstadt, Courtney Carpentiere, Cara Nys, and Alysandra (Alie) Smith. Coaches Mark Howard and Julio Halty work hard in ensuring that all of the girls get some playing time so they substitute frequently during matches.

Sophomore Catherine (Cat) Walters and Freshmen Becky Schlosberg and Emily Borland round out the defensive line as the teams' rotating goal keepers. When the 'keepers are not in the goal line-up, Coach Mark mixes it up and puts them in with the midfielders and forwards to give them a different perspective.

Since that first match on November 2, Jupiter has had possession of the ball for more than 50% of the time plus the midfielders have pretty much kept the ball on the opponents' side of the pitch. Those midfielders, anchored by Sophomores Lauren Heatwole, Chelsea Lowe, Julia Villandry, and Kristen Jones have proven to be a force to contend with, sending the ball forcefully up the field. Freshmen mid's Shayna Prendergast, Rachel Piersall, Taylor Shook, and Michela Vaccaro are quick on their feet, and, along with the Soph's, scored their fair share of goals thus far.

Freshmen Kiera Anderson, Jasmine Garvey, Nina Halty, and Sophomore Brittany Lear complete the roster in the Forward position. Between the forwards and the midfielders, their combined efforts have scored 49 times in the 10 matches - that's 9 shut-outs and one tie (2-2). In the running for the Golden Boot is Jasmine and Kiera - tied with 10 goals each. Kiera has scored three goals, or hat-tricks, in each of two games, against Martin County High and Palm Beach Central. If there were an award for 'Golden Arm", it would go to Midfielder Lauren Heatwole, who can throw-in a soccer ball almost 50 feet from the sideline!

The Team has three gamesthis week, with theirfinal match comingin mid-January. At that point, most of the girls will head back to their competitive clubs and resume tournament play traveling across the state through the Spring.
