Hobe Sound, FL, October 20, 2009 - The Pine School boys' golf team made school history by bringing home the school's first-ever District 19-1A championship, defeating nine other schools with long golf traditions - including St. Edward's School, Lincoln Park Academy, and Jupiter Christian - at the Stuart Yacht and Country Club Monday. At the PGA Dye Club in St. Lucie West, Pine School senior Caitlin Deasy also advanced to the regional tournament, which will be held at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach on October 26.
"In our five short years as a high school, it has been a race to see which can be our first-ever team to be a district champion," Pine School Athletics Director Nathan Washer said. "Coach Arlen Bento and the boys have won that race, and it's a proud day in Pine School history."
"What is even more exciting is that the oldest member of the team is only a sophomore," Washer added. Sophomore Grant Mortell leads a squad that includes freshman Ryan Deasy and three middle school players - eighth graders Greysen Gardner and Reid Mortell and seventh grader Nick Gagliardi.
"The golf team will be the first high school team to put a team banner on the south wall of our gym," Washer said, "and we hope it's the first of many such banners in our history. "
