The smell of fresh cut grass filled the air Saturday as the Astros warmed up for their home opener in the Farms against the Braves.
There was excitement in the stands and nervous laughter in the dugouts as the coaches handed out the batting orders and field assignments for the first game of the 7-8 machine pitch season.
With the Braves up first and showing some great hitting the Astros had some first game jitters and had a hard time completing an out. But the fielding itself was outstanding! Grady Vandiver III, playing pitcher, knocked down a line drive that would have surely gone into the out field. Mark Silver also made a great play by putting away a towering high pop. Ronnie Worley was strong at third stopping several hard grounders. Ryan Svopa, besides getting a double, played with confidence at shortstop. On the other corner Charlie Stuve jr. was solid at first. Josh Williams and Taylor Leonard patrolled the outfield like sharks on a reef.Ruairi Murphy created the play of the day getting caught in a pickle between third and home. After a round or two of "Ruairi in the middle" an over throw allowed him to race home with speedy Chris Radice also taking advantage of the error to round third and score practically holding onto big Ruairi's shirt tail!
The Astros made up for any fielding miscues with their bats. A whooping team batting average of .708 was the proof. Dan Alarie,Taylor Leonard 1 RBI,Ruairi Murphy 1 RBI ,Chris Radice 2 RBI's,Aj Riczko jr 5 RBI's, Charlie Stuve jr.and Josh Williams all batted .1000.
Showing fantastic fielding versatility Matthew Lavallee, Dan Alarie and AJ Riczko played Catcher in between stints in the field. Supporting team spirit was injured Brian Nichols jr. who kept the team pumped and the dugout alive.
A great game by both teams! Great weather and a great crowd made for a perfect opening Day for baseball in Jupiter.
