Rematch leaves a clear winner at Pee Wee Level
Contributed by: Tim Derrico on 10/29/2009

The Pop Warner Playoffs began with the Pee Wee White Mustangs, coached by Dan Schlager and sponsored by The Waterway Cafe, facing the Gold team. These teams had met once before in the season and Gold had the win, so this wasthe rematchwhere thewinner moves on and the loser goes home for the season. The White Mustangs were down 4 players due to sickness and injuries so they prepared to play hard.

White won the toss and received Gold's onside kick. Thomas Talenti powered down 15 yards but a penalty brought it back to the 50. The White was held and the ball was turned over on downs. White's defense worked hard, but Gold got the first score and the end of the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter began with another Talenti run, also called back because of a penalty. The defenseive players Mikey Lay, Devon Bradford, Alex Derrico, Brian Butts, Keandre Lillard, Chandler Holroyd, Tyler Coliskey, Kane Cochran and Jacob Skulski put lots of pressure on the Gold's offense, however their passing game afforded them another score putting the White Mustangs down by 13-0 approaching the half. But the White team has been coached all year to keep playing and that "inch by inch" they would win their games. On Gold's next possession they fumbled and White recovered the ball. Then the call was overturned by another referee and returned possession to Gold. The White fans became upset with the inconsistent calls and penalties and let it be known but the players kept their focus and a few plays later Drew Lipscher caught a pass and took the ball 40 yards. Then with only 4 seconds left on the clock Max Jones ran for a touchdown and the score was 13-7 at half-time energizing the team and the fans.

There is no "I in Team" and the 2nd half demonstrated this well. Every player was key to what happened next. The defense led by Grant Wrightson, Brian Butts, Kyle Forbes, Kyle Meehan, Richard Bowden, TJ Hawker and Brett Messler was strong and focused and unyielding. Once in possession the White team offense moved the ball steadily downfield. Talenti for 15 yards, Jones for 5 yards, Lay for another 5, then a running touchdown by Talenti, an extra point by Jones and White wasnowin the lead 14-13 .

Gold's next possesion was derailed by the defense once again. Skulski and Lillard with a quarterback sack, Jones, Lipscher and Bradford breaking up pass plays and Lay batting down a 4th down pass. As thelast quarter began the White team was in charge. They battled back and forth with possessions and with only 4 minutes left Talenti broke several tackles and scored the 3rd touchdown making the score 20-13. Gold's final possession proved fruitless as Coliskey and Bradford made several hard hitting tackles. With 2 minutes left Gold had no more time outs and White gave the ball to Tyler Coliskey who ran the ball for 30 yards dragging two defenders along with him. The clock ran out and the crowd went wild. Two fine teams had just played some great football.
