Bring a Little Sun in Your Life
Contributed by: John Pugsley on 2/1/2008

Fabian Arroyo, a Certified Building Contractor who started his own Four Seasons Sunrooms franchise 17 years ago, offers homeowners the best of both worlds: A clear view of the outdoor surroundings, combined with the comfort of being indoors. For many South Florida homeowners, sunrooms built by Four Seasons become a signature part of their home, a glass jewel that is as durable as it is beautiful. Arroyo took time recently to answer a few questions.

What are the different types of sunrooms available?
Sunroom designs range from simple patio enclosures to more complex conservatory-style additions. Many sunrooms are additions, enclosed areas where homeowners can enjoy the surrounding view in comfort, with no worries about bugs, rain, heat or humidity. Customers love to look up into the night sky and see stars. We install all types of design elements: straight eaves, curved eaves, solid roofs, glass roofs, English-style conservatories, Great Room-style enclosures, and all sorts of combinations in between.

What are some of the interesting reasons homeowners have sunrooms installed?
With 27 years experience designing, building and installing sunrooms: you imagine it, we build it. We have customers who created their mark of distinction, their kitchen into a glass ceiling sunroom and others who have added on guest bedrooms and offices that are signature showrooms. Imagine a library of natural light, or a dining room at sunset. Of course, there are customers with unique reasons: One customer had three expensive parrots, who looked very tempting to circling hawks. We built a glass enclosure that allowed the parrots to look out at the woods around them and feel close to nature, without having to worry about nature's consequences.

If a sunroom is 95% glass, are there unique concerns or issues related to all-glass sunrooms?
With a glass room, you have to deal with a host of issues, including heat, cold, glare, air filtration, condensation, and UV protection. Our state-of-the-art glass is Energy Star Certified from the US Department of Energy. Four Seasons is North America's largest manufacturer of sunrooms and not only develops the glass technology but manufactures the strongest and most advanced glass available anywhere. Our glass is coated with microscopically thin layers of exotic metals and compounds, which allow beneficial light to pass through into the room while blocking out oppressive heat and ultraviolet light that damage furnishings and fine artwork. Our glass has a high R value, which is a measure of insulating qualities. A higher R value reduces transference of outside temperatures into the room - which helps keep cooling costs down in the summer, since the heat stays outside and the cool air stays inside. Likewise, on a cool day, warmer air will stay in the room. This glass works as well in Alaska as it does in Florida.

What is important for customers to know about structural integrity?
The beauty of our sunrooms is equaled by their strength. The products are wind resistant above 140 mph. The frames and glass are designed to withstand the demands of South Florida weather as well as four international seasons.
