Floridians face unique interior design challenges. The elements are harsh on furniture and materials, and air quality can suffer when allergens become "trapped" in homes constantly cooled by air-conditioning. ASID Fellow, Mary Jane Grigsby of Adesso Design, Inc. brings a fresh approach to these design challenges, while creating beautiful spaces that "feel good." Grigsby is one of only a handful of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified interior designers in the U.S., a program accredited through the U.S. Green Building Council. She is currently serving an eight-year gubernatorial appointment to the State Board of Architecture and Interior Design. Mary Jane recently took a few minutes to discuss the latest "buzz" in interior design and her design philosophy.
Within the field of interior design, what products are clients asking for today?
Clients are looking to add more architectural interest and are paying more attention to ceilings with details such as angles, millwork detailing, plasters and plaster techniques. And they want beautiful, easy-maintenance fabrics that stand up to humidity and fading.
Tell us about some of the new, "green" products available today.
As consumers become more environmentally aware, there is a movement to use more "green" materials that have a positive impact on indoor air quality, energy consumption and the environment. The green movement presents an opportunity for homeowners to enhance their quality of life with out compromising aesthetics. When "green" options such as Low VOC paint, renewable products from replenishable forests, and energy-saving systems are incorporated in a home's design, homeowners can enjoy rooms that are not only beautiful, but also healthy, cost-effective and environmentally responsible. A home should not only look good, but feel good, as well.
What is VOC?
The EPA considers indoor air to be one of the top 5 hazards to human health.
Paints and finishes on furniture, release low level toxic emissions into the air for years after application. The source of these toxins is a variety of VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) which, until recently, were essential to the performance of the paint. We now have whole new products available to us, low VOC and zero VOC, that are available.
What's passé in interior design today?
Silk fabrics-they don't wear well in a humid climate-faux painting, over-scale furniture, animal skins and expensive living rooms that don't get used.
What design tips do you have for homeowners?
Trendy design is short-term. Stay away from design and designers that prescribe to a "flavor of the season." Good design is all about function, décor and the lifestyle. Not every room needs to be a showpiece. The rooms you live in the most should receive the most attention.
What standards or certifications should consumers look for when hiring an interior design firm?
LEED certification tells the consumer that the designer is experienced in sustainable design and knowledgeable about incorporating environmentally-friendly materials into the design process. In order to be accepted into the industry's leading professional organization, ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), members must meet rigorous standards including education from an accredited design program and/or extensive full-time work experience. Always ask for references, and if possible, go beyond the portfolio and actually experience first-hand some of the spaces they have designed. A good designer doesn't necessarily have a defined "style" because they interpret the lifestyles and desires of each client, creating a totally "new" look with each project.
