Staying on Top of Roofing
Contributed by: Kathy Oristaglio on 2/29/2008

Following two devastating hurricane seasons, many unlicensed-and unscrupulous-roofing contractors took advantage of homeowners and businesses. As a result, the roofing industry in Florida suffers from a less than stellar reputation. George White, owner of Elite Roofing is changing that perception for his customers by staying abreast of the latest technologies and offering a higher standard of professionalism. Elite Roofing specializes in cement and clay tile, asphalt shingle, and "Key West" style metal roofs. Elite is one of the few roofing companies in the area with the equipment and expertise necessary to install tile using the patented Polyset® Tile Roofing System, which offers 50-100% greater wind resistance than nails and screws. White took a few minutes recently to share his views on the roofing industry and some tips for homeowners.

My roof will need replacing soon. Are there any new technologies that will help my new roof withstand hurricane-force winds and perhaps lower my insurance?

For asphalt shingle roofs, Owens Corning manufactures an asphalt shingle that carries a 130 mph limited wind warranty. It's the only asphalt shingle product we install. Make sure any roofing material you use-tile, metal or shingle-meets or exceeds the new, stricter hurricane codes. When replacing your roof, the entire roof structure should be inspected to ensure that it meets the latest hurricane building code, as well. If you have a skylight, replace it with one that meets the Miami Metro-Dade hurricane code.

What are the advantages of installing roof tiles with the Polyset system.

Hurricane Andrew demonstrated the need for a better method of tile attachment. The Polyset Tile Roofing System is designed to withstand Category 5 hurricane winds. It employs the use of Polyset, a patented, polyurethane adhesive used to lock tiles in place. Unlike nails and screws, Polyset won't rust, corrode or damage the waterproof underlayment of your roof with puncture holes. If you're interested, you need to find a roofer who has the equipment, training and expertise needed to use this specialized system.

What should I look for when hiring a roofing company?

First find out if they are locally owned and operated, licensed and insured. Check their rating and any complaints they have on file at your local Better Business Bureau. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of roofers out there that are unlicensed, or have issues against their license. Ask about their scheduling. Many roofers will "stake" several jobs at once, which means that your roof will take longer to complete. Reputable roofers install only one roof at a time, from start to finish. Ask about work preparation and clean-up. Do they install tarps to protect the pool and driveway? Do they use dumpsters, which can tear up a driveway? How long in advance of the roof work beginning will materials be delivered? Do they have a sure-fire method for retrieving roofing nails from the lawn? These are all great questions to ask.
