One of the highlights of Wally & Penny's India Adventure was the vibrant Pink City of Jaipur the capital of Rajestan with its rosy pink sandstone buildings. Our first scene was people by the road getting milk in big silver containers. Water is added so each buyer dips their hand in the jug to test the strength before they purchase. We climbed on the back of an elephant to ride up to the fortified beautiful Amber Palace that was very impressive perched beneath a 7 mile long defense wall and fort. We enjoyed tourign the palace and took a jeep down the mountain to tour the city in a rickshaw and see the famous Palace of the Wind again.
The lively streets in Jaipur were filled with colorful bazaars with fierce vendors hawking their wares as camels pulling wagons paraded up and down the roads. Everyone gets out of the way for the sacred cows, many wandering the roads among mopeds, rickshaws and big tourist buses. Cows that give milk are chained and the ones that wander are bulls, calves or non- milk cows. The streets are also filled with Hindu women in colorful Sari's carrying bundles on their heads.
The majority of India is Hindu. One night we attended evening services at a Hindu temple, where red curtains are opened to show two Hindu God statues which are offered water, flowers and sugar cubes. A conch horn blew and cymbals were struck making loud sounds calling people to prayer. The Hindu's treat their Gods like member of their family and offer them water and food each evening before they put them to sleep and each morning when they have their wake up service. So at this evening service after five minutes of loud bongs and cymbals the curtains were closed to put their Gods to sleep until the next day.
Tomorrow we will head towards Agra with a stop at a deserted 16th century city, Fatehpur Sikri before we arrive at the famous Taj Mahal.
