India Adventures cont. Fatehpur Sikri before Agra
Contributed by: Penny Sheltz on 4/21/2008

The India Adventure continues on the way from Jaipur to Agra. Wally and Penny spot many camels on the road and see drivers with colorful turbans. One group of camels was off the road eating the lower leaves from an acacia tree. One stopon the way was a deserted 16th century city, Fatehpur Sikri of the Mongul empire, with perfectly preserved buildings including a palace. This ancient city is known as the ghost city and also city of victory. It is on a ledge 2 miles long and one mile wide and 7 miles around with a lake 20 miles around the city. It was ruled by Akbar in 1583 and was deemed to have grandeur exceeding London at that time. Akbar had no son until he visited a holy man named Sikri for a blessing so he named the city after the holy man when he had a son. Fatehpur Sikri has a victory gate 134 ft high that can be seen for miles. It has a mosque Jama Masjid that holds 10,000 people. There was a 350 ft long hall for public audience, courtyard with cloisters, and hall of judgement. If people were judged guilty of serious crimes, they were impaled, hung or trampled under the feet of an elephant. There was a long building that had the housing for concubines. There was also a huge courtyard with 4 bridge walkways crossing a small lake in the middle.
