Adventures in India cont..Agra Bull Attack
Contributed by: Penny Sheltz on 4/23/2008

As we travel India we were amazed to see so many cows everywhere. Cows are sacred in India so they have the right away on the roads, sidewalks and everywhere. People have to step over their droppings.
After we left the Taj Mahal on a dusty Agra highway I was amazed to see cows and bulls ambling down the congested streets as mopeds, buses, cars, rickshaws and tuk tuk's darted around the animals.

Farther down the street I spotted a big white Brahma bull with very big horns just standing on the side of the road so I was enticed to get his photo. As I approached the side of the bull, my husband took my photo by the bull. He seemed content as I touched the big hump on his back. It did not occur to me that I was wearing a red shirt I had purchased the previous day in Jaipur.

The bull suddenly turned his head to get a good look at me and when he spotted my red shirt his demeanor changed quickly. He tossed his head and gave a snort, and in a flash I was on the ground with his horn poking my ribs. It happened so fast, one minute the bull was quiet and the next moment he was raging.

I felt a sharp burn as his horn scraped the skin under my shirt. I thought of Pappaloma and prayed I had not been gored. I was drug away through the dirt by my husband and an Indian man who seemed to be more concerned about protecting the bull.
I scrambled to freedom arising from the ground with my chest skin abrasion and a cut on my hand from the fall. I was so lucky and thankful I was alive and my camera had also survived. What an experience to add to my lifetime adventures..

We stopped at a marble shop and saw beautiful replicas of the Taj Mahal and beautiful embroidery work.
Our next stop was the Red Agra Fort and Palaces.
The rusty red sandstone Agra fort and its palaces were built by Emperor Akbar in 1565. It stands on the banks of the Yamuna river and is surrounded by a wall 70' high, plus a 40' moat with a 70' wall behind it. The wall entend around the fort
1 1/2 miles. When Akbar finished the fort he then built the palace which is an amazing place with remanents of rich gilded decorations, library, courtyards and bedrooms and a ceiling supported by serpents carved in stone. The Agra Fort and Palace have a view of the Taj Mahal
