India Adventure, Kathmandu Cremation Site
Contributed by: Penny Sheltz on 5/13/2008

Our next stop was a Kathmandu Cremation site in Nepal..
We visit a Cremation site temple on the Shiva river a tributary of the Ganges. It is like a mini cremation site to the one we saw in Veranasi, India on our river ride on the Ganges. We are able to see a dead person with their head exposed as they are washed with river water, then wrapped in the red cloth before burning.
We were able to photo bodies being prepared for burning from our view across a narrow river. After the bodies were washed with river water, they are covered with a red and yellow shroud. Some bodies were burned in ovens while some people stack logs for burning the next body by the river.
Monkeys scampered along the walls and sidewalk on our side of the narrow river.
Sadhu's, Hindu holy priests with their bodies painted white and streaks of color on their faces sit in meditation and pose for photos for tourist money.
Vendors hawk their wares in our faces as bodies burn in the background.
Ladies in colorful sari's wander around with some carrying bundles and small babies on their backs.
Desperate vendors follow us everywhere offering their necklaces and some sell mini spiritual wheels and even spirtual bells
