When we told people we were going to Borneo they asked, "Where it Borneo?
Borneo is a large island north of Australia in the South China Sea. It is owned by 3 countries, Malaysia on the West half, Indonesia on the East half, and small Brunei on the Northwest coast.
We fly Malaysian airlines with pretty stewardesses from LAX to Taipei to Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia. Then we fly to Kuching on the island of Borneo.
Our first stop is the Kuching Hilton hotel on the Sarawak River, that flows into Kuching from the South China Sea. All the rooms at the Hilton have arrows on the ceilings pointing to mecca and we hear muslim prayer chants five times a day.
Kuching, was once the capital of the White Rajahs of Sarawak, now has a population of some 500,000. Kuching is small enough to walk around but interesting enough to keep us there for several days, and a good base for exploring Sarawak.
The name of the city, Kuching, is thought to derive from the Malay word kucing, meaning cat. Many of the locals refer to Kuching as the "Cat City" and there are many cat statues. We stop is at several of the city's cat monuments and learn the story of how a cat waved customers into a shop long ago, so they now use a waving cat as a symbol to wave people to their city.
The pretty city of Kuching is considered one of the cleanest cities in Malaysia and was voted as one of the world's healthiest cities, recognized and awarded by both United Nations and WHO. First we visit the city hall, then a Chinese Temple, and next to the Sarawak museum and totem pole by the unique lipstick palms.
There are cute monkey statues outside the museum.
