Captain's Review:
Non-Toxic Marine Fouling Resistance For High Speed Sportfishing Boat Propellers, Rudders, Trim Tabs, Screens, Scoops & Thrusters
By Jon Meade "In The Bite magazine"
If you're like me, you hate going over the side, even if it's in the slip. That's why we keep the local diver's number set to speed dial in our cell phones right? Well, wouldn't it be nicer to keep your running gear clean for months on end without ever making that call? With a Mussel Buster Coating that might be the situation. "Mussel Buster is a high tech super hard epoxy coating that can be used in all kinds of marine environments to prevent underwater marine growth on exposed gear such as props, scoops, and grates," explained Jack Thygesen, President of Matrix Engineering Concepts - thepatent holderof Mussel Buster Propeller Protection. As the EPA gets stricter in regards to antifouling bottom coatings, non-toxic alternatives such as Mussel Buster become the premier alternative. "Our product is designed specifically to handle the stress and rigors of high speed sportfishing boats. In the rare case that some burn off may occur, as on some of today's 40 knot plus sportfishers, growth is unlikely to form in those areas anyway due to intense heat and wear," added Thygesen. One of the biggest benefits of the product is its longevity. On active vessels, a coating should last up to two years with regular to annual maintenance with a scotch brite pad. "The only thing people don't like about the product is the2 - 3 daysinvolved with application," explains Herb Jarrett of Treasure Coast Propellers. Application must be done in a controlled environment by trained technicians at one of their facilities located in: West Palm Beach, Sarasota, Charleston South Carolina, Cape Cod Massachusetts, Plymouth Michigan and San Juan Puerto Rico."This list will continue to expand, so visit the website

Furthermore, the epoxies must be cured in aoven meaning any gear must be removed from the boat before application. How did it perform? "I've been completely impressed with Mussel Buster in the high growth areas," explains Captain Tom Ewer of the 65' Hatteras, "Jade" from Palm Beach. "With once a year scrubbing on the props, they only need recoating every two years while we recoat the strainers every year," expanded Ewer. Did Mussel Buster add to his economy? "I wouldn't say that my performance improved by putting the coating on, but I continually saw better speed and fuel economy because my wheels were always clean." Would he recommend the product to other captains? "Absolutely" remarked Ewer.
