Workforce Solutions to Oversee Disaster Assistance
Contributed by: Jamie Jackson on 8/27/2008

Workforce Solutions was recently notified that a federal National Emergency Grant is being awarded to their organization to provide disaster assistance to city and county governments located in St. Lucie and Okeechobee County, as well as other public and private non-profit agencies.

The grant funds are designated for wages paid to temporary workers engaged in the clean up and restoration of public property, and for the distribution of humanitarian aid, such as food, clothing and shelter. Manpower, Inc., Workforce Solutions' contracted provider for payroll services, will work with Workforce Solutions to recruit and qualify workers for these public projects. Workers will be paid by the grant. Local public and private non-profit agencies will provide supervision for the workers.

Workers displaced from their regular employment due to damage from Tropical Storm Fay, displaced workers not receiving unemployment compensation, and long-term unemployed individuals are eligible for these temporary jobs.

"According to a recent news article, St. Lucie County sustained more than $66 million in damages. In addition, the City of Okeechobee reported a need for workers to clean debris from roads, ditches and canals. This National Emergency Grant can help defray the public cost of removing the debris, and repairing facilities and grounds damaged by Tropical Storm Fay, while providing unemployed workers with a paycheck. This is a win-win for both our local governments and workers", said Gwenda Thompson, President/CEO of Workforce Solutions.

Agencies interested in temporary workers and unemployed workers interested in temporary jobs should contact 1-866-4U2-HIRE, or 1-866-482-4473.

Workforce Solutions, formerly known as the Workforce Development Board of the Treasure Coast, is a private, 501(c) 3 nonprofit corporation that coordinates workforce solutions for Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties. The mission of the Board is to build an integrated workforce development system for jobseekers and employers by analyzing labor market needs, effectively and efficiently coordinating the delivery of resources, programs and services, and evaluating the results for accountability.
