Skincare During Pregnancy
Contributed by: Dorothy Kamm, Yates & Associates on 6/2/2008

Many women develop a special glow during pregnancy. For others, all the additional hormonal activity wreaks havoc and causes a variety of skin problems. According to Lisa Sherrell, Licensed Clinical Aesthetician at Women's Health Specialists Aesthetic Services, "Acne is the number one skin problem that pregnant women face, particularly acne around the mouth and on the chin. And, the acne may continue after your baby's delivery."

"It is not uncommon to find that you need to alter your regimen," says Sherrell. Skin care products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicyclic acid or any of the retinoids should be avoided because they are considered hazardous for pregnant women. "You can safely use glycolic acids, alpha hydroxy acids, as well as sulphur-based topical products," suggests Sherrell.

The second most common complaint is dark patches of melasma that forms on the face. Also known as the "pregnancy mask," the change in skin color is a result of hormonal changes and sunlight exposure. "The only way to decrease or minimize this condition is to avoid prolonged sun exposure," says Sherrell. "Always wear a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Additionally, products with topical vitamin C may help because of their natural ability to suppress pigment." Sherrell warns against using skin lightening products with hydroquinone. "With a few changes to your grooming routine, you can get glowing and join the ranks of some of the world's most beautiful pregnant women."
