TCBA asks homeowners to beware of fly by night contractors
PORT ST. LUCIE (August 25, 2008)-In light of the wind and flooding damages sustained by the residents of St. Lucie, Indian River, Okeechobee and Martin counties brought by Tropical Storm Fay, the Treasure Coast Builders Association (TCBA) reminds home owners to be vigilant and avoid "fly by night" contractors.
Homeowners needing repair work done quickly to repair storm damaged homes and property are at risk. One of the untold costs associated with natural disasters, like tropical storms, are losses due to frauds. Often contractors appear and further victimize disaster victims by cheating them out of their precious and often limited resources, as well as leaving repairs unfinished.
The following signs are cause for alert:
- You're told that on this job, a contract "won't be necessary."
- You're asked to pay for the entire job "up front" - or pay cash to a salesperson instead of a check or money order to a company.
- You are confronted with scare tactics, intimidation or threats.
- You're told you've been "chosen" as a demonstration project at a special, low price.
- You're told a "special" low price is good only if you sign a contract today.
- The contractor won't give you reference - or the references can't be located.
- You can't verify the contractor's business address.
Homeowners should ask for and check references, ask for proof of insurance, obtain a written estimate and contract for projected work, and ensure any necessary permits are pulled.
A list of contractors who live and work on the Treasure Coast is accessible on the TCBA website,
