The Treasure Coast Food Bank Receives $10,000 Donation from National City

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - [2008] - The Treasure Coast Food Bank, an organization that works to eliminate hunger and reduce food waste in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties, announced today that it received a $10,000 donation from the National City-Harbor Foundation. The donation will help fund the retrofit and expansion of their warehouse, which serves as a food distribution center for organizations and recognized denominations that feed the hungry along the Treasure Coast.

The Food Bank obtains, warehouses and distributes food and personal items to targeted individuals, non-profit 501c3 agencies and recognized denominations that feed people at no charge.

"The donation from National City will enable the Treasure Coast Food Bank to begin needed renovations to our physical plant including the expansion of office and warehouse space. Ultimately, this gift will allow us to process and distribute more food to meet the growing demand of the hungry in our community," said Laura Alexander, executive director of the Treasure Coast Food Bank.

Founded in 1988, The Food Bank started when a handful of volunteers distributed food off the back of a truck to area church feeding programs. As the community has grown, so has the need for emergency food assistance. Over 2 million pounds of food was distributed to the hungry in 2007 providing approximately 1.3 million meals. The Treasure Coast Food Bank also works with local, state and national agencies during times of disaster. Despite sustaining considerable damage to its facilities in the Hurricanes of 2004, the Food Bank took action as a first responder providing an additional 1.3 million pounds of emergency food to Treasure Coast disaster victims for 11 weeks after the storms. In June 2005, the Food Bank moved to its new location on Industrial 25 th Street, Ft. Pierce, where it continues daily operations to alleviate hunger.,

"The National City donation is the first, local corporate foundation" award directed to our facility retrofit and expansion," said Food Bank President, Thom Padrick. "We anticipate other foundations and corporations will follow their investment in our organization as the downturn in the economy puts greater demand on our services."

"The Treasure Coast Food Bank provides an invaluable service to our community and we are proud to support the efforts of their volunteers and dedicated staff," stated J. Hal Roberts, market president for the Central/Northeast Region of National City.

The donation is part of National City's ongoing efforts to be a contributing member of the community. National City has designated a charitable fund of $2 million to be used and administered exclusively in Central and Northeast Florida.
