Mural Captures Catfishing Industry
Contributed by: Karen Hanawalt on 6/4/2007

In the early 1900's Okeechobee had a rich catfishing industry. Lake Okeechobee had an abundance of catfish, a modern ice plant and an active rail road. This unique partnership allowed catfish to be shipped all over the county. Okeechobee Main Street and the Okeechobee Historical Society has partnered to give the community a second mural project. Outside the Jeff Robinson Electric Building on the corner of Park and 441 South, muralist Kathy Scott has captured this period in time when fishing wasa major industry. Along with shipping catfish, the railway shipped fresh produce, citrus, turpentine, timber and cattle. Upon completion of the mural, there will be a dedication in Flagler Park to celebrate Okeechobee's 90th anniversary as a county.

Okeechobee Main Street will continue to provide the community images of life, history and culture through it's mural program. For more information, please call Main Street at 863-357-6246.
