The hot Florida sun beat down on the dirt stadium at Harlequin Farms on June 5, but
Carly Butts
, 11,
Kimberly Demusz
, 13, and
Carmela Nespolo
, 14, couldn't have looked happier to be outside.
The trio got to ride ponies, play a game of "cowboy polo" and learned an emergency dismount - all before lunch.
It was a typical morning at
Harlequin Farms
and
Choyce Party Ponies
' summer horse camp, where "horse-crazy" children can spend the summer riding their favorite animals.
"The number-one priority is safety and fun - in that order," said
Joyce Chartier
of Choyce Party Ponies.
In addition to riding, campers will learn how to groom, tack-up, bathe and feed horses and ponies. The camp also offers an air-conditioned classroom for horse-related projects, art and videos.
Chartier is still accepting applications for later camp sessions, which run weekly through Aug. 4. The three campers at the June 5 session all seemed to be seasoned riders, but the camp will take riders of all experience levels, Chartier said.
"You can never have been on a horse, and you can come to summer camp," she said.
