On August 21, 2009, Light of the World Charities' president, Theresa Banks, and her team of 8 doctors and nurses left Palm City for a return trip to Africa.
Two years ago on their first visit, Light of the World Charities' surgical/medical mission found their way to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tanzania. There they met "Sister/Doc," as the local Tanzanians called her. She was a nun and a surgeon. She ran the hospital, but the hospital had two operating rooms, and they were both empty. There was no surgical equipment and most of the hospital professionals there were not trained in the use of such equipment. Light of the World returned home, located some used equipment from hospitals in our area, raised money to buy them and other needed items, and sent them off to St. Joseph's.
Now, two years later, a new medical team from Light of the World returned and was greeted with hugs, a bouquet of roses and an African"lei." The team performed 46 operations. They also spent a very successful time training the African nurses and anesthetists It was a bit of a challenge as their primary language was Swahili, but after a lot of sign language and lots of nods, smiles and frowns, the important training was completed.
The two week mission ended with some tears as the sisters and nurses were sad to see the visiting team leave. It is Theresa's intention to return to St. Jospeh's twice a year, but as Light of the World is a charitable organization, it will depend upon its supporters and the grace of God.
