Five for Free Helps Fill Food Pantry
Contributed by: Doreen Poreba, The PR Czar® Inc. on 8/24/2009

The House of Hope's food shelves have received a boost, thanks to the "Five for Free" program that was organized by chiropractic physician Dr. Kevin Grimes.

Throughout July, Dr. Grimes offered free evaluations and treatments every Thursday in exchange for five cans or boxes of food per patient. In all, he collected a half-ton of food, or 1,000 pounds, which were donated to the House of Hope (HOH) when the program ended.
Everyone who participated in the program - Dr. Grimes, two office assistants and a public relations consultant - donated their time and expertise to help make the program a success. Members of Boy Scout Troop 822 also contributed their time by helping with the delivery. The value of all donated services totaled nearly $10,000.

Dr. Grimes originally scheduled the program for Thursday mornings between 8 a.m. and noon, but because of the high response rate, he extended the offer to the entire day on Thursdays. In addition, each patient was offered an additional four visits for another five cans or boxes of food per appointment. Both new and existing patients participated in the program.

"I'm extremely pleased that I was able to serve the community through this program and want to look at perhaps expanding the program next year," said Dr. Grimes.

Dr. Grimes' hope was that other professionals in the community would see the value in his program and participate by creating programs of their own. Richard Hays, a licensed massage therapist specializing in deep tissue and relaxation, plans to do just that.

Hays is doing his own version of "Five for Free" at Tao Chi Massage and Skin Care, 1051 S.E. Ocean Blvd. in Stuart. During September, Hays is offering one 30-minute massage for first-time clients who donate five cans or boxes of food to HOH. Existing clients who want to participate will receive an extra 30 minutes for their massage. The program is limited to one session per customer and those interested must call (772) 219-9171 to make an appointment.

All collected food will be donated to House of Hope, which provides food, clothing, case management and emergency financial assistance to people who work hard but find themselves unable to make ends meet. Clients are typically low-wage service industry workers, fixed-income senior citizens, single parents, the recently unemployed and people going through personal life crises.
