During these tough economic times, many pet owners find it difficult to find money for heath care for their dog or cat--especially well-care like having their pet spayed or neutered
. At the same time, not having one's pet
sterilized has far reaching effects in terms of increasing the number of unwanted pets, further overloading our local shelters and even necessitating the euthanasia of beautiful and healthy but unwanted dogs and cats. Enter Animal Birth Control, a local
501(c)(3) non-profit
organization, and its second Annual Spay Neuter Day, which too
k place Saturday, August 1, 2009.
This year, local veterinarians Dr. Ball, Bierbaum, Diamond, Paulfen, Pike, Tomes and Wood perform
ed the surgeries (and provide
d a rabies shot) on
over 215 cats and dogs. Appointment
s were required to insure that adequate resources were available. The vets provided this service at a reduced rate, which was underwritten by the non-profit organization Help Us Help Them, so there was absolutely no cost to the pet owners. Of course
, it takes many people to check the pets in, examine the pets before surgery, clean surgical instruments and call pet owners to let them know that their animal companion is ready to go home
. All of these people donated their time to this worthy cause.
"We understand the importance of spaying and neutering in improving the quality of life for our furry friends in Martin County," said JoAnne Matz,
Tournament Director of the Help Us Help Them
Jupiter Island Club Charity Pro-Am Golf Tournament and Luncheon. "We're grateful for the support that enabled us to underwrite this event."
