Recently, parents of students at both Martin County and South Fork H.S. decided to enroll their youth in the Palm Beach County high school roller hockey league at Skatezone in Lake Worth (
www.pbho.com
). The rules of the league state that only students from a particular school can play on that team, so both Martin County and South Fork have teams. Although not sanctioned by their respective schools and funded entirely by parents and sponsors, participants are required to maintain a 2.0 GPA to participate.
After try-outs in September, each team held practices and scrimmages. At the opening of the season this week, the two teams were scheduled to play each other in the first, regular season game. Both represented their team well and the evenly talented squads played until an overtime period produced a winner and final team hand shake.
The M.C Tiger team went up 3-1 on the S.F. Bulldogs in the second period, only to have the Bulldogs battle back and tie it in the third period. South Fork had the opponents on the ropes with a two man advantage in the last two minutes of regulation. Jason Burkhardt and Kevin Reilly were up to the task for Martin County, playing spectacular defense while goalie, Justin Burkhardt did everything but stand on his head to make saves on shots that eluded the defense. As the teams entered the OT period, Martin County was still shorthanded a man for 1:46 seconds. Again, they killed off the penalty and with only 16 seconds left in overtime,Brett Pare' scored to record a 4-3, Tiger victory.
Both teams look forward to playing teams from the Palm Beaches. All games are played at Skatezone in Lake Worth and Martin County currently only fields JV division teams. If the beginning of this season is any indication, it won't be long before Varsity squads are added. Matt Saum is the head coach of the Tigers.
