A recent study concerning health in the United States has revealed that over 60% of America is either obese or considerably overweight, of which approximately 40% are inactive. This includes our children. A growing number of youngsters are gaining weight at an earlier age. Just look around the local mall or other teen hangout, the evidence is there. As parents it is our responsibility to provide better food choices and encourage our children to participate in a healthier lifestyle, they follow our example. Lack of physical activity is a main contributor to being overweight. Childhood obesity has been shown to have a direct link to adult morbidity. Simply encouraging our young ones to get more active can add healthy years to their life. It can be as simple as showing them the door. Children can double their amount of physical activity by simply playing outside.
Research is now showing that children aged 5 to 16 need to be active up to 90 minutes a day. We know this is not happening in school, nor is it likely happening at home, thanks to xbox, playstation, and television. Experts said the study doesn't mean children have to spend 90 minutes on a treadmill - they just need to run around and play physically, even for short bursts of time. The benefits of the study was conclusive. The more active children had healthier numbers for blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin. This study makes the most convincing case yet for the benefits of children being involved in some form of physical fitness.
There are many programs in the Jensen Beach area to get your kids active. Some of these even encourage the parents to get involved and have fun alongside their children.
