New Hendry County Speedway Racing Results for 3/31
by Cowboy

March 31, 2007

Saturday nite racing action is alive and well at Hendry County Speedway. 60 drivers took to the track in 7 different classes. There was a lot of good food like the cuban sandwich from Joey's Pizza that caught my attention. I washed it down with a fresh squeezed lemonade and was ready to see some great racing.

The Street Stock Division was the first up. The heat race went smoothly for everyone except #12 Randy Glover who lost an engine. John Wilson (Okeechobee) led the first four laps until Jesse Brown(Clewiston) advanced to the lead. Wilson was able to get the advantage on the first lap of the feature until Brown got by on lap three. The race went caution free for the twenty lap duration. Jesse Brown took the win. While John Wilson held off Tommy Hill (Clewiston) who had returned the 1H back to duty this weekend. Portus Mellette(RPB) and Joel Goldfrank(WPB) rounded out the top five.

On the first lap of the Bomber heat there was a pile up in turn one. Four cars went to the pit. The nite was over for #57 Carl Perman(WPB) and #17 Jose Valdez(Miami). Ernie Turner(Labelle) and Carol Vanwagner(Labelle) battled for the lead. Turner spun coming out of turn four on lap three giving the lead to Vanwagner. One lap later Ed Steinhoff(Greenacres) found the groove and took the lead for the rest of the race. The feature was all Steinhoff who lead the race wire to wire. Steve Colon ran second but was later disqualified not passing tech inspection. Carol Vanwagner and Ernie Turner were setting up another good battle when Turner's engine apparently let go on lap twelve. Vanwagner would go on to receive the second place honors. Ken Sabino and Joe Minnitti also did not pass tech inspection giving Chip Bache(Davie) the third spot.

The first heat race in the Sportsman Division had an incedent between Tom Lusk(Okeechobee) and David Bratman(WPB) in the first corner. Lusk lost his left rear wheel. Michael Cherry(Valrico) found it with the front of his car. He launched the front of the car at least six feet in the air. It was very spectacular for all who had the chance to see it. Cherry decided to take the car to the pits and check it out before the feature. After the complete restart Bill Lassiter(PSL) had a flat right front on lap two leaving Travis Drapal (Labelle) and Mark Taylor(Moore Haven) to do battle for the win. Taylor took the checkers. Heat race two was all Rick Miller(Stuart) until a spin on lap six gave the lead to Calvin Filingame. Jesse Brown finished second driving David Simpson's car #0 for the nite. The feature would end early for Brown with some distributor problems. Calvin Filingame(Labelle) was as fast as I had ever seen him. He lead the first 14 laps until Michael Cherry took the lead. Immediatly after the caution flag flew for passenger door bars that had fallen off Cherry's car in turn three. Cherry would have to start in the rear with just six laps left. One lap after the restart #3 Joe Henke set up a pass coming out of turn two and took the lead. Calvin Filingame and Rick Miller swapped the second spot until another caution with only two laps left. Miller tried hard to get under Henke on the front straight at the restart. Henke(Naples) was able to hold him off and capture his first feature win in the #3 car. Miller finished second and Filingame third. Michael Cherry got by Bob Steinmetz(Naples) by about a foot at the line to take fourth.

Mini Stocks were 11 entries stong tonite. Glenn Bidwell(Loxahatchee) was the class of the field. He lead every lap of the heat race and the feature. Brian Bail worked his way up to second in the heat. That was also where he would spend the entire feature. On lap 7 #75 Paul Phillips got turned up the track and hit the wall hard in turn four. Alot of drivers battled for the third spot including Ken Tubbs, Wayne Stout, Charles Perman and Gary Hart. In the end it was #57 Zack Perman(Ft. Pierce) with the spot. Stout finished fourth anf Hart fifth.

Mini Mods was #10 Wayne Hildebrand(Okeechobee) winning the heat race. #21 Jack McClain (Loxahatchee) was in the lead of the first half of the feature until Hildebrand got by on lap 8 going on to win the feature. McClain ran second and Shawn Reiss((Jupiter) finished third.

Pure Stock Division was 15 cars strong this evening. Heat one Tommy Hill Showed his winning driving style by passing six yes six cars in the first corner to take the lead on the first lap. Everone slid high up the race track and he was clear to drive by on the bottom. Heat race two was Conrad Molter on some new tires taking the win over the eight car field. The Feature was Tommy Hill From the start. While Jonny Mosely and Skip Talbot traded the second spot back and forth. On lap twelve Skip Talbot found his way by Tommy Hill to take the lead. Hill Finished second and Moseley third. Brian Morgan and Conrad Molter rounded out the top five.
