The Bennett Auto Supply Pepsi Chevy Show at Moroso
Contributed by: Moroso Motorsports Park on 2/9/2006

Jupiter, FL – The 23rd annual Bennett Auto Supply Pepsi Chevy Show presented by Miller’s Ale House Restaurants, brings back the number one Chevrolet Bow Tie Bash of the year to Moroso Motorsports Park March 11-12, 2006. This event, sponsored by the Gater 98.7fm, continues to draw the largest crowd of the year to Moroso Motorsports Park with an average attendance of 39,000. The two-day Chevy festival features quartermile Chevy drag racing, Show-n-Shine, a Corvette Shootout, The Seminole Tribe of Florida Quick 16 Series, two Jet Dragsters, two Jet Funny Cars, a Jet Truck, a Wheelstander as well as two AA Fuel Altereds. Other highlights of the weekend include the Bikini Contest and one of best Swap Meet and Manufactures’ Marketplace for Chevy restoration parts and accessories in the state.

One of the racing features, on Saturday, of the Bennett Auto Supply Pepsi Chevy Show is the Seminole Tribe of Florida Quick 16 race. This class takes the fastest 16 Door Cars, Dragsters and Bikes after two rounds of qualifying, placing the bump at about 7.40 seconds in the ¼ Mile. The Quick 16 field is running for the highest purse offered, over $4,000. Racers are also vying for points based on their performance throughout the year. Last year, the competition was tough and they had to run in the 1/8 mile during the Chevy Show. In the end, John Tolisano, of Jupiter, ran en ET of 4.825 (4.74 DI) @ 141.91mph and was able to defeat Tom Cabral, of Davie. Cabral had a faster run but was late out of the box (.244) and posted 4.817 (4.69 DI) @ 135.35mph.

Entertaining just under 40,000 people for the weekend is no easy task. The jet vehicle and exhibition lineup during the Chevy Show attracts fans from all over. Pepi Urban and his, Freightliner Semi was able to blaze the quarter-mile at 197.97mph in just 8.298 seconds. “Xtreme Machine” is powered by a GE J-79 jet engine that produces 18,000 pounds of thrust! Jet Dragsters, “Miss-ta-Fire”, driven by Elaine Larsen and Jessie Harris, “Queen of Diamonds” will go head to head for bragging rights followed by Chris Gould’s “Fire Power” Jet Funny car competing against the “First Strike” piloted by Rich Hanna. Wheelstander “Texas Bandit”, driven by Tony Caprio will run the ¼ mile on only two wheels.

Something not seen in a long while at Moroso are a pair of classic Nitro Fuel Altereds. These have a historic following dating back to the 1960’s with their strong horsepower and short wheelbase. During the 1970’s there were hundreds of these creations but now, only less than a dozen exist. NHRA showcased these cars at the 50th Anniversary at Indy in 2004 and Moroso Motorsports Park is happy to have them back. “Nanook” is a 1923 Ford Roadster driven by Rich Hough and is capable of running the ¼ mile with an ET of 6.18 at 236mph. Hough will be competing against Ron Hope with his “Rat Trap” 1969 version with a very unique paint scheme. The name Rat Trap was the product of the “engine wars” of the 60’s when Chevy powered altereds (big block Chevy engines called “rat motors”) challenged the Chrysler powered altereds. “Rat Trap” was one of only four cars that made up the legendary Fuel Altered Tours of 1970-1972.

Off the track, the Chevy Car and Truck Show-n-Shine will host the competition in the paddock as a variety of GM show vehicles will be on display for all to admire. Witness the beauty of All-American Corvettes, Monte Carlos, Chevelles, Camaros and Impalas along with every type of truck on display at the 2-day show. With classes for every model and year, cars and trucks from all walks of life will attempt to take home the choice awards. "Club Participation", "Best of Show", "Best Interior" and the Meguiar’s sponsored, "Best Paint", just to name a few of the specialty awards that will be given out over the weekend. Last year, the highly coveted, “Meguiar’s Best Paint” award was given to Frank Lauduean, of Davie, for his 1970 Chevelle SS (right). Frank also received a complete custom car care package from Meguiar’s that will help keep his SS bright and colorful.
