Customer Service, a Lost Art
The decline in customer service

Customer Service-A Lost Art?
Contributed by: Edward Vossen   on 2/13/2006

Recently I had been experiencing problems with my cellular phone service. A quick busy signal would be gotten by anyone trying to reach me by calling my cell phone number.

After going to the provider (Cingular) I was told that there was a known issue with my type of phone and they no longer carried that brand. Gentleman gave me a number to call and with one quick call a new phone was on the way. Thinking this would resolve the problem I dropped the concern from my mind.

The new phone came, I activated it and lo and behold the same problem existed. Nobody could call me, especially around noon and between 4-6PM.

The "fun" was just beginning. After many phone calls and speaking to many different customer service personnel, I gathered information that added up to the fact that Cingular has too many customers in South Florida. They do not have the capacity to handle calls during the above mentioned time periods.

As I had this problem for a two month period, I asked for a credit for that time frame. I was told by various people that this would not be possible. They would constantly tell me that there was a "KNOWN" issue in South Florida. Because I was able to make outgoing calls I was getting service and no credit was to be allowed.

I asked the representative, If I sold you a car and the door fell off and I told you the rest of the car is working fine so you will have to be satisfied with that, would you be happy. They didn't get it.

So I now have partial service that I pay full price for and nothing other than a whopping $10.00 credit is all that can be done.

Oh and another wonderful bit of news was given to me by an agent: It will get worse during Spring Break. Now isn't that comforting.

My first cell phone was with Cingular and I actually looked forward to the day my contract would be fulfilled. Their customer service was a D minus and they constantly charged me for "roaming" which was not a part of our "deal". My new company was AT&T & I was really happy with them until Cingular bought the company. Those people are like a bad penny! I think that we should all be given the opportunity to get out of our contracts when this buyout thing happens - my deal was with AT&T, not Cingular. But, Nooooooo. Good luck during Spring Break!
