Nina Haven Community Foundation to award up to $75,000 in new scholarships to graduating Martin County high school seniors
The Nina Haven Charitable Foundation is accepting scholarship applications from Martin County high school seniors through November 30.
Applicants must commit to continuing their education at a two-year college or four-year university to receive up to a $2,500-a-year scholarship. Scholarships are based on academic GPA and financial need. Since the scholarship is renewable by maintaining the required 2.0 or better academic GPA, students may receive as much as $10,000 toward their education.
According to the foundation's president, Judith Weber, who also was a Nina Haven Charitable Foundation scholarship recipient, the foundation expects to give approximately 30 scholarships this year.
"Students of Martin County High School, Clark Learning Center, Jensen Beach High School, South Fork High School and the Pine School are encouraged to apply. Applicants must submit an essay on why they feel they should be considered and the final 30 scholars will be selected after one-on-one interviews."
The Nina Haven Charitable Foundation was created in 1959 by Stephen Peabody, from Massachusetts, and two of his New York attorney friends in honor of Peabody's mother, Nina Haven. Peabody died four years later and left his entire estate to the foundation. Since inception, the foundation has given $3.7 million to 800 students in continuing education. Of those 800 students, many have become engineers, pharmacists, architects, teachers and attorneys.
