Last week, 14 Treasure Coast youth spent a fun-filled week at
Babysitter's University, offered by the American Red Cross Martin County Chapter. Participants earned certification caring for babies and children, in CPR and First Aid, and in Basic Water Rescue through leadership and team-building activities. "Other activities included creating fun snacks that can be made while babysitting, developing games and activities, as well as teaching about positive discipline," said Crystal Knezek, Director of Youth Services. A workshop called YES Leadership (Youth Enjoying Success) introduces basic leadership skills, such as decision making, role modeling and conflict resolutions. They practice handling, feeding, changing, and caring for an infant with a simulator called RealCare baby. "Participants also learn business basics, including how to obtain babysitting jobs, while developing leadership skills," added Knezek.
While Babysitter's University won't be offered until Spring 2009,
Babysitter's Training is offered monthly. The next class will be held on Saturday, August 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Students, ages 11 through 15, will learn skills for effective babysitting, including safety, basic care, decision-making, choking, and first aid. The fee for this class is $40.
