Tea Time Advice Boosts Sunscreen Protection
Contributed by: Dorothy Kamm, Yates & Associates on 6/11/2008

Women's Health Specialists Aesthetic Services brand of sunscreen, Replenishing Sunblock SPF 36 Light Moisture Antioxidant, remains its top selling cosmeceutical. To enhance its sunblocking qualities, Lisa Sherrell, Licensed Clinical Aesthetician at Women's Health Specialists Aesthetic Services, recommends brewing a cup of green before applying sunscreen. "Green tea contains polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has been found to be the most powerful naturally occurring antioxidant," said Sherrell. "Studies have shown that the EGCG component of green tea had the ability to block UVB rays. When applied directly to the skin, green tea polyphenols reduce UV-induced sunburn and enhance the protective properties of sunscreen," explained Sherrell.

Sherrell suggests steeping the green tea for five minutes, then placing the tea in a covered jar in the refrigerator to chill prior to application. "The temperature of the tea will be refreshing when you apply it using a cotton ball," said Sherrell. "Remember, however, that green tea used by itself doesn't provide sufficient sun protection. Sunscreen is still essential to properly block UV rays," added Sherrell.

Women's Health Specialists Aesthetic Services' Replenishing Sunblock SPF 36 Light Moisture Antioxidant is a dermatologist formulated sunblock blocks both UVA and UVB sunrays that can cause premature aging. "UVA rays cause pigmentation, premature aging and some types of skin cancer. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn, pre-malignant skin lesions and some types of skin cancer. Replenishing Sunblock SPF 36 not only protects the beauty of your skin, but also protects it from dangerous sun damage," added Sherrell.

Replenishing Sunblock SPF 36 is ideal for daily facial wear. Its botanical antioxidant formulation protects and also lightly hydrates skin. Sherrell recommends the following sun protection measures.

*Avoid unnecessary sun exposure, especially between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

*Use sunscreen daily and reapply often, even while driving or working under office light.

*Provide further protection by wearing a broad-brimmed hat and long sleeves when outside.

"Bear in mind that sunscreen alone does not provide total protection," said Sherrell. "Limiting sun exposure, wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen on a regular basis will reduce your risks of skin damage and other harmful effects due to sun exposure."
