Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach To Host 12 Major Public Events September through December 2009 (West Palm Beach, FL - August 21, 2009)
The Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden today announced 12 major public events from September through December 2009: 1. PLANT SALE WEEKEND Everything Orchids / A Shady Affair Saturday & Sunday, September 12-13 - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Members Free; Non-members $5 +
Everything Orchids will feature top orchid growers, artists, and craftspeople that will share their knowledge of and passion for orchids. In fact, more than a dozen special vendors will create magnificent tabletop arrangements that will be auctioned off in a silent auction to benefit Mounts Botanical Garden. Fun and informative lectures will be offered on topics such as Basic Orchid Care, Mounting Orchids and the Care of Cattleyas.
Dr. Martin Motes, who will sign copies of his book and offer orchids for sale, will give an "Introduction to Orchid Growing". +
A Shady Affairwill feature more than a dozen additional vendors selling numerous varieties of begonias, bromeliads, orchids, ferns, hoyas and aroids. Lectures and demonstrations concerning the care and implementation of shade loving plants will also be offered. 2. Nourishing Communities: One Vegetable Garden at a Time Saturday, September 19 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free for members and Non-members, but advance registration is required Everything you need to know about planting community and home vegetable gardens in Southeast Florida, featuring exciting speakers, tours and topics. Lunch will be provided. Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service, the University of Florida/IFAS and the Friends of Mounts Botanical Garden will present this daylong event. avegprogram@pbcgov.org. 3. Evening Garden Walk Wednesdays, September 23 - 6 p.m. Members Free; Non-members $5 Meet at front garden entrance Enjoy the beauty of Mounts Botanical Garden in the early evening hours. The narrated tour will be led by
Allen Sistrunk, Garden Director, and will include the history and future vision of the garden, stories of folklore and ethnobotanical uses of South Florida plants. This will be a wonderful opportunity to experience evening fragrances of exotic flowers and the Garden's resident nocturnal creatures. 4. Mounting & Repotting Orchids Saturday, September 26 - 9 a.m. to Noon Members $30, Non-members $40 Mounts Auditorium Instructors
Tom Wells and Sandi Jones ofBroward Orchid Supply will explain what orchids need -- water, light, fertilizer, temperature. Attendees are encouraged to bring an orchid (up to 6 inches) to be repotted or mounted. Several methods will be demonstrated such as potting and mounting on tree fern, cork bark or grapevine. Orchid supplies will be available for purchase. 5. Vegetable Gardening in South Florida Saturday, October 3 - 9 a.m. to Noon Members $35, Non-members $45 Exhibit Hall A Registration deadline is September 30 Now is the time to start vegetable and herb gardens. Mounts' Horticulturist
Mike Page will teach how to successfully grow your own vegetables, covering everything from seed to germination to harvest. Tips and techniques will be shared on how to have a productive garden and enjoy fresh chemical-free produce. All participants will receive a vegetable seedling to take home. Be sure to register early, this is a popular workshop that has sold out in the past. 6-9. Designing, Creating & Maintaining Your Home Landscape Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21 & 28 - 6 to 9 p.m. Exhibit Hall A Members $50, Non-members $60 Registration deadline is September 30 This four-session workshop will cover all the necessary steps to improve your home landscape: + Session One (October 7) includes an evaluation of your site conditions, how to avoid common landscape mistakes, and a review of good design principles. + Session Two (October 14) begins with a tour of Mounts Botanical Garden to see and discuss a large number of plants suitable for South Florida. Participants will also learn about purchasing, planting and establishing the plants. + Session Three (October 21) offers experienced gardeners who will address landscape problem areas, evaluate ideas and discuss options. + Session Four (October 28) will focus on maintaining a landscape with useful tips and techniques for conserving water, reducing pesticide use and minimizing labor. 10.
