Meyer Jewish Academy Students Win Israel Quiz
Contributed by: Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County on 5/7/2008

Daniel Milstein, an eighth grader at the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy, bested 11 other area middle school students to win a roundtrip ticket to Israel as the winner of the final round of the Aluf Israel (Hebrew for Israel Champion) Quiz. The quiz was part of myriad programs celebrating Israel's 60th anniversary and the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County's Israel at 60 events, which are sponsored by Federation's Israel Program Center, The Robert M. Beren Foundation and the Makom Israel Engagement Network.

Samantha Schneider of Lake Worth finished in second place and won a laptop computer. Wellington resident Alec Delaney took third place and won an Apple iPod. Both students also attend the Meyer Jewish Academy.

Earlier this year, nearly 150 students participated in the first round of the quiz by answering a series of questions on Federation's Web site. The 24 highest-scoring participants competed in a second round, taking a written test of 60 questions covering famous people, geography, history and cultural events from biblical times to six decades of Israeli statehood.

The final round featured the top 12 participants in a live game show. The finalists were from Delray Beach in the south to Wellington in the west and north to Palm City, and attend sixth, seventh or eighth grades at public or private schools.

The Israel Program Center provides our community, its synagogues and agencies with a connection to Israel through the center's resources, events and educational programs. All local Israel at 60 events are sponsored by The Robert M. Beren Foundation in cooperation with the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. Tami Baldinger is the chair of Federation's Israel at 60 Committee. Irwin Levy and Alan L. Shulman are the honorary chairs of the Israel at 60 Committee.

The goal of Makom, a program of the Jewish Agency for Israel, is to strengthen local residents' knowledge of and connection to Israel. This is accomplished by working with area agencies and synagogues in the greater Palm Beaches to create models of Israel education and involvement that will be emulated throughout the country. The greater Palm Beaches is one of 12 Jewish communities throughout North America that are part of Makom.

The Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County serves residents from Boynton Beach to Jupiter and west to Wellington as the central Jewish community-building organization of the greater Palm Beaches. Federation strengthens Jewish identity, energizes the community's relationship with Israel and meets the human needs of the Jewish community in Palm Beach County, Israel and 60 countries around the world.
