TEMPLEBETH DAVID INITIATES MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
Palm Beach Attorney Gary Lesser To Chair Committee
(PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL,)... Only 16 percent of Jewish families living in the Greater Palm Beach County area are affiliated with a synagogue. Resident surveys cite many reasons for this lack of participation in Jewish life locally: Florida snowbirds belong to congregations "up north" or "out west", young couples may be waiting to join until their children are of school age, couples in mixed marriages may feel uncomfortable participating.
Temple Beth David, a conservative congregation in Palm Beach Gardens, is offering a free six-month membership to new members starting January 1, 2007, who Temple leaders hope will take advantage of the myriad of programs offered at the Temple and preschool. The membership initiative will be chaired by Palm Beach Attorney Gary Lesser, managing partner of Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, LLC.
"We are looking to attract a variety of people," said Temple President Irwin Shipper, and the goal is to increase Temple Beth David's membership by 100 people through a marketing and educational campaign. The Temple currently has 400 members and is looking to increase membership to 500. Built in 1975, Temple Beth David added a new sanctuary and school wing in 2002 to accommodate the population and housing growth in the northern Palm Beach County area. The preschool currently serves 140 children. Lesser explained that the trial membership will be in effect from January 2007 to July 2007, and new members can participate in all the social and educational programs for both children and adults. Trial members will receive a bulletin which lists all Temple events, an emailed newsletter which itemizes all weekly happenings and all information about educational and children's programs in which they are invited to participate, said Lesser.
"Temple Beth David is a great place for Jewish residents who are on the fence about joining a Temple," Shipper said. According to Lesser, a member for 10 years, "Temple Beth David is a great Temple for adults and children alike. It's a place where people feel very welcomed, and you can meet great people and discover a Jewish connection." His committee plans to promote the scholar in residence programs, youth programs, the genealogy project, the off-site events such as The Immigrant Experience in which Temple members travel the route of Holocaust victims in Poland and interfaith programs with other local religious leaders.
Temple Beth David is located at 4657 Hood Road, Palm Beach Gardens, Fl. For additional information please call Executive Director Susann Ferrara at (561) 694-2350.
