On April 18th, hundreds of local community businesses, residents, and cancer survivors will meet at Dwyer High School for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Palm Beach Gardens. Like any Relay for Life event, the goal is to raise money to fund cancer patient care, education programs, and new methods of cancer treatment and cure.
While fund raisers are a normal part of any Relay for Life event, one team this year has created a fund raiser that will have a lifelong impact for those who choose to participate. Jeremy and Alissa Nelms, the owners of Fitness Together - Palm Beach Gardens have created a unique fund raiser with the lofty goal of helping Palm Beach county lose 10,000 pounds, as well as raise $10,000 for this and future American Cancer Society events.
"We want to be clear that the challenge is about creating a healthier community and raising money to help cancer research," said Jeremy Nelms, who added that there is no requirement to train at their studio.
For 6 months, participants in the challenge will receive nutrition, fitness, and motivation tips via a weekly email. In addition, the Nelms will host 4 teleseminars designed to cover more advanced weight loss topics. Finally, they have created a community website where members of the fund raiser can interact, provide support and motivation, and share workouts and recipes.
"Participants in the challenge are also competing for a chance to win a cruise for two," said Alissa Nelms. The fitness duo will be picking a winner 'Biggest Loser' style and sending the contestant with the largest percentage of weight loss on a cruise with a companion. It is $37 to enter the challenge, and 100% of the entry fee goes to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event.
